For Andrea Purnell, co-curator of The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Arts in the 21st Century, the exhibition was an opportunity to show love to her city and St. Louis imprint on the global phenomenon that has saturated popular culture. 'For me, it is a moment to celebrate our hip-hop culture and our importance in the movement,' said Purnell, who serves as SLAM manager of audience development. 'We were the first region to play a hip hop song on commercial radio. But this exhibition is also showcasing our hip hop artists that are here and rising.
